Once a vast Spanish rancho, settlers and investors arrived in 1870 to found a worldly colony rich with culture and educational opportunities. They brought with them a host of social and recreational customs, including golf and polo. These seedling traditions were steadfastly planted, resulting in the development of Riverside's first golf course and magnification of its equestrian heritage, which continue to thrive today.

Soon thereafter, California's citrus industry took root here, turning Riverside into one of the country's wealthiest cities. With neighborhoods springing up, year-round sunny weather, railroad transportation, and the world-renowned Mission Inn, Riverside became a coveted resort destination as well.

The face of Riverside was further beautified through Mission Revival architecture, which began right here. Introduced to the world with the establishment of the Mission Inn, located in what is known today as the historic district of downtown Riverside, this unique architectural movement became among the most prominent features to distinguish this special locale.
